How to Make Your Own Handprints/Footprints

Materials needed:

1.)  Black, washable ink pad (We highly recommend Delta/Rubber Stampede black washable ink pads from Michael's craft stores.  Otherwise, check with your local craft store.)

2.)  White card stock (Do not use regular white paper!  It will not make a good print)

Instructions:

1.)  Take ink pad and rub it against subject's palm or bottom of foot.  Make sure to coat it nice and even with a moderate layer of ink.  Get up on the sides of the fingers/hand (or toes/foot) a bit for a good print.  (Note:  Getting good handprints from a child under 6 months is difficult to impossible since they want to ball them up alot.  Go for the feet!)

2.)  Instruct subject not to wiggle when their hand/foot is placed on the paper.

3.)  Hold subjects hand/foot and place it straight down on the card stock.

4.)  Lightly press on different parts of the hand/foot making sure all parts make contact with the paper.  Rock hand/foot side to side slightly if needed.  Only takes a few seconds.

5.)  Do not let subject pull back their own hand/foot.  Lift it straight up off the paper to avoid smears.

6.)  Clean hand/foot with soap and water.

7.)  Let prints completely dry before handling.

Scanning:

1.)  You can mail your prints to us or scan them yourself and send them to us electronically.

2.)  If scanning, for best engraving results, please do the following:

  • Scan as grayscale (not color or B/W)
  • Scan at 300dpi or higher resolution
  • Save scan in JPEG format

Notes:

1.)  If you make a print you do not like, just draw an "X" through it and redo the print on the same side or back of the card stock.  Repeat until you get a print you like.

2.)  The quality of the print dictates the quality of the engraving.  Use a nice black (not gray) ink.

3.)  Do not take a picture of your lips or lip prints with a camera.  This will not make a good engraving.

4.)  If you do not have access to a scanner, mail the prints to us and we will scan them for you.

5.)  Do not worry about small smudges and smears.  We can edit those out in the process.

6.)  Have fun with this part!  Kids really enjoy it!
